Expanding the Horizon for Asset Management:
TAM Beyond Bridge and Pavement Assets

Transportation asset management is consistently evolving. This includes the incorporation of new data collection items and the management of ancillary assets, in part, to assist transportation agencies in achieving their strategic goals and vision utilizing existing assets and resources. These methods and practices need to continue to progress and evolve to incorporate developing technologies and other forms of critical mobility infrastructure. Transportation agencies are setting goals around improving the reliability of the mobility system, decreasing congestion and improving efficiency, and safety, among others. These goals cannot be achieved without utilizing new and existing assets and resources owned by transportation agencies; however, to date there has been limited guidance on ancillary asset management.
Our work in this area contextualizes transportation asset management, identifies critical technology and other emerging assets that states are tracking, and provides recommendations on data collection, stakeholders, and areas for future research.
