ARA’s SERVICE Program recently sponsored the Black Hills Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition in Western South Dakota.
Middle school Mathletes® from four western South Dakota schools took part in the Black Hills Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition. First the students celebrated their hard work this season with a pizza party before competing in three intense rounds of written exams followed by a head-to-head, beat-the-buzzer math battle for a chance to go to the state competition in the State capitol of Pierre.
Nationally, more than 100,000 students participate in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series each year. The program aims to build confidence and problem-solving skills for students who participate. Programs like MATHCOUNTS are critical to preparing students to succeed in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) careers of the future. MATHCOUNTS is sponsored nationally by the National Society of Professional Engineers and local competitions rely upon member volunteers to organize the events.
